Flint Particle System v 1.0.3 released

June 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Coding, Flex, flash, news, open source, resources, welcome

Richard Lord over at Big Room just announced the v1.0.3 release of his Flint Particle System.  If you’re not familiar with it:

Flint is an open-source project to create a versatile particle system in Actionscript 3. The aim is to create a system that handles the common functionality for all particle systems, has methods for common particle behaviour, and lets developers extend it easily with their own custom behaviours without needing to touch the core code.

Check out the newest features in v1.0.3.

Introducing as3gaming.com - The Actionscript Game Development Wiki

May 13th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in as3gaming, news, welcome

We’d like to proudly introduce the newly launched as3gaming.com - the actionscript game development wiki. I know I recently said that the new set of resources would be similar to the CakePHP Bakery, but after playing around with it, a MediaWiki similar to Wikipedia seemed to fit the bill better.

So what is the as3gaming.com wiki? From the site:

The focus of as3gaming.com is Actionscript and Flash gaming development, news, and reviews. Quite Simply, we believe that the future of gaming for many people will be the browser. Whether you’re building a casual flash game, or a rich AAA title, as3gaming.com is the place to get help, share your knowledge, and discuss your projects.

That about says it all. What kind of articles can you write in the as3gaming.com wiki? Anything pertaining to flash and actionscript, but with a preference for content specific to gaming. That means feel free to write Tutorials, How Tos, Game Reviews, source code, a description of your project, etc. When in doubt, just create it - we’ll be moderating the content to keep it on topic and spam free.

Go check it out! And if you have any suggestions on how we can make it better, shoot me an email at admin [ at] as3gaming.com

About the author: Rhymenoceros

December 10th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in welcome

Welcome to AS3gaming.com!

My name is Rhymenoceros, and my rhymes are bottomless… If you can email me and tell me where that’s from, you win a prize. I promise it’s a good one. Google is cheating.

Anyways, this is supposed to be an “about me” post so I better get serious. My name is Brit Gardner and I was born and live in Dallas, Texas. I’m in my mid-twenties, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Yeah, you heard right - Mechanical Engineering.

I can hear you asking yourself, “self, why is this guy - a mechanical engineer - messing with an actionscript 3 gaming site?” Well, after graduating I worked as engineer for 2 years but during that time I became deeply interested in web development and web technologies. I was too young back in the late 90s when the first internet boom was happening to really grasp the situation. But this time around I witnessed Google, Youtube, Myspace, Facebook, etc. all take off. Who couldn’t be interested in that stuff?

Me being a technical junky, I dove into the technologies building these multi-billion dollar phenomenons. AJAX was (still is?) all the rage when I first started developing for the web. Javascript DOM and DHTML was (still is?) the best thing since sliced bread and actionscript 3 / flex 2 / flash 9 was just a whisper on the net. Long story short, I quit my day job to start developing web applications full-time and never looked back.

Another passion of mine is gaming. I’ve been a gamer all my life, starting with the Nintendo Entertainment system I’ve owned just about every major console since. So, now I said to myself, “self, why don’t you combine your two passions and create a frankenstein of awesomeness?”

So there you have it, the beginning of AS3gaming.com. I’m really excited about how the browser and the web as a distribution channel can be used in the gaming realm. Everything from casual “pop cap” games, to marketing-based gaming, to more in depth, story driven, persistent games on the flash platform.

So that’s a little perspective about myself and where I came from. As you can see, I’m relatively new and not classically trained in the ways of the jedi a programmer. So a lot of the writing on this blog, the tutorials, etc. will be from the ground up; assuming nothing about the skill level of the reader.

Once again, welcome to AS3gaming.com! That’s a little bit about myself, why not hop on our forums and introduce yourself? Finally, if you’re interested in contributing to the blog, administrating the forums, the wiki, or just want to say, “what’s up?” shoot me an email at brit@as3gaming.com.
